The Russian front

by

THE battle for Russia is almost a global war by itself. From Bering Strait, it stretches to the opposite side of the globe. From north to south, it spans the distance between eternal polar cold and cotton growing country. Russias chief weakness is that despite tier sire and the length of her northern and far eastern sea coast she lacks dependable ports for handling supplies and munitions from her Allies. Her two salt water gills-the Baltic and the Black seas-are blocked by enemies. And the northern seas are blocked to a great extent by ice. So Russias problem of maintaining her fighting fronts is a problem of global transportation as well as of homo production. Long ago she handled the home production with war in mind. By concentrating factories in the new industrial region protected by the Urals she prepared for crisis and used distance as a defense. Russia is a big place to blitz.
